Power on the switch and ensure no ethernet cables are plugged into the ports.The SYST light will be a steady green once the POST is completed. It will perform a POST (power on self test) which tests the hardware to make sure everything is operational and no components are missing. (Optional) Power on the switch with nothing plugged into the ports.

The following steps I took will vary depending on what make/model switch you are configuring. With some google-fu and persistence, I persevered. Note: that I did not configure the switch using the console port but instead with a VTY line (Virtual Terminal - Telnet). I have only had brief encounters with "managing" switches previously and have never attempted to implement one into my home network. I stumbled upon an old Cisco switch my brother provided me a while back and I figured I'd boot it up and try to configure it using command-line-interface (CLI).
